Hummingbird
Blues legend BB King had just scored a Top Twenty hit with “The Thrill Is Gone” and asked to record Russell’s “Hummingbird” from Leon’s amazing premiere solo album and not only got the go ahead, Leon joined in as pianist.
Joe Walsh, guitarist for the James Gang (also on ABC Records as King), who had recently recorded their album Rides Again (with the hit “Funk 49”) was in for the May 26 sessions too as rhythm guitarist, along with Russ Kunkel on drums and Bryan Garafalo on bass. Bill Szymczyk was the producer, who also produced for the James Gang.
Two weeks later, Jimmie Haskell held a sweetening session with nine musicians to record his string section arrangement for “Hummingbird.” It, and two other songs recorded with Leon, Joe. Russ, and Bryan, were put on King’s album Indianola Mississippi Seeds.
“Hummingbird” (with Leon counting it in) was recorded during the 1-4 pm session and “Kings Special” and “Ask Me No Questions” were done during the 4:40-7 pm session. The latter went on a single and made it to number 40.

LEON RUSSELL – Hummingbird
Track 5 from his self-titled debut album released in 1970 copyright Shelter Records. It was recorded at Olympic Studios in London, Sunset Sound Studios, Gold Star Studios and Wally Heider Studios in L.A. and Ardent Studios in Memphis.
Leon Russell was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma and began his sixty-year musical career performing in local clubs at the age of fourteen using a fake I.D. His first band the Starlighters, which also included guitarist J.J. Cale, helped create the “Tulsa Sound” later popularized by Eric Clapton on his album “Backless.”
At sixteen he moved to L.A. to become a session musician and songwriter. He played piano and guitar on successful recordings by numerous artists from The Beach Boys to Frank Sinatra. During that time he also co-wrote a couple of hits for Gary Lewis & the Playboys. He founded Shelter Records with Denny Cordell in 1969. This album received above average reviews but only reached No. 60 on the Billboard chart. It featured some of the most popular and respected musicians in the industry. His classic “A Song for You” wasn’t released as a single but would go on to be covered by more than two hundred artists and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2018.

Oh, sometimes I get impatient but she cools me without words
And she comes so sweet and softly, my hummingbird and have you heard
That I thought my life had ended and I find that it’s just begun
‘Cause she gets me where I live, I’ll give her all I have to give
I’m talkin’ ’bout that hummingbird She’s little and I love her too much for words to say
When I see her in the morning sleeping Yes, she’s little and she loves me till my lucky day
Hummingbird don’t fly away Woah, yeah
When I’m feeling wild and lonesome she knows the words to say
She gives me understanding in her special way and I have to say
In my life I’ll love no other, she’s more than I deserve
And she gets me where I live, I’ll give her everything I have to give
I’m talkin’ ’bout that hummingbird She’s little and I love her too much for words to say
When I see her in the morning sleeping Yeah, she’s little and she loves me till my lucky day
Hummingbird don’t fly away (Don’t fly away, yeah, ooh)
(Don’t fly away, ooh) (Don’t fly away, ooh) (Don’t fly away, yeah) (Don’t fly away)
