1st RECORDING OF: Blue Moon – Ted Fio Rito (1934–Muzzy Marcellino, vocal)

Al Bowlly recorded this song in 1936. It may be the first instance of the familiar “50s progression” in a popular song and has become a standard ballad.

Al Bowlly – Blue Moon 1935 Ray Noble  Ray Noble New Mayfair Dance Orchestra – Al Bowlly January 12, 1935 Victor 24849  Blue Moon” is a classic popular song. It was written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934, and has become a standard ballad. The lyrics presumably refer to an English idiomatic expression: “once in a blue moon” means very rarely. (The origin of the expression is unclear; see article blue moon.) The narrator of the song is relating a stroke of luck so unlikely that it must have taken place under a blue moon. The title relies on a play on words, since Blue is also the colour of melancholy, and indeed the narrator is sad and lonely until he finds love. Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart were contracted to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in May 1933.

Greta Keller – Blue Moon – 1935
Margaretha Keller was born in Vienna, Austria in 1903. She was trained in dance and acting and appeared onstage with Marlene Dietrich and was a model for how Dietrich developed her own voice and style. A record contract in 1929 was her big break taking her to Berlin and Prague, then to London and New York. She lived in Hollywood in the 1940s and was married to the wealthy David Bacon. Bacon was murdered in 1943 and Greta returned to Switzerland and Vienna to restart her career. She made numerous voyages back to the U. S. For 45 years Keller made records from the earliest Victrola days to the dawn of CDs. She acted in film, performed radio concerts, hotels clubs (notably New York’s Waldorf), musicals, revues, and foremost was a recording artist. Decca 39293B 1935.

The Boswell Sisters were a close harmony singing group, consisting of sisters Martha Boswell (June 9, 1905 — July 2, 1958), Connee Boswell (original name Connie) (December 3, 1907 — October 11, 1976), and Helvetia “Vet” Boswell (May 20, 1911 — November 12, 1988), noted for intricate harmonies and rhythmic experimentation. They attained national prominence in the USA in the 1930s.

The song was a hit twice in 1949, with successful recordings in the U.S. by Billy Eckstine

Blue Moon of Kentucky. Patsy Cline. (1964)

A 1934 popular song. Words by Lorenz Hart. Music by Richard Rodgers. Published by Robbins Music Corporation. Midi and vocal by Fred Feild. Lyrics 1. Once upon a time, before I took up smiling I hated the moonlight Shadows of the night the poets find beguiling Seemed flat as the moonlight With no one to stay up for I went to sleep at ten Life was a bitter cup for the saddest of all men Chorus: Blue moon, you saw me standing alone Without a dream in my heart Without a love of my own Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for You heard me saying a prayer for Someone I really could care for And then there suddenly appeared before me The only one my arms will ever hold I heard somebody whisper please adore me And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold Blue moon, now I’m no longer alone Without a dream in my heart Without a love of my own 2. Once upon a time, my heart was just an organ My life had no mission Now that I have you, to be as rich as Morgan Is my one ambition Once I awoke at seven, hating the morning light Now I awake in Heaven, and all the world’s all right

Elvis Presley “When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again” on The Ed Sullivan Show

Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan (April 7, 1915 — July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Nicknamed “Lady Day” by her friend and musical partner Lester Young, Holiday had a seminal influence on jazz and pop singing. Her vocal style, strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists, pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. “Moonglow”, also known as “Moonglow and Love” is a 1933 popular song with music by Will Hudson and Irving Mills and words by Eddie DeLange. “Moonglow” was first recorded by Joe Venuti and his Orchestra in 1933, with later recordings by Ethel Waters and Benny Goodman and his Orchestra in 1934, and has since become a jazz standard, performed and recorded numerous times by a wide array of musical talents. A recording of “Moonglow” by the Benny Goodman Quartet is part of the soundtrack to the movie The Aviator. and the movie The Fabulous Baker Boys. Lyrics: It must have been moonglow, way up in the blue It must have been moonglow that led me straight to you I still hear you sayin’, “Dear one, hold me fast” And I keep on prayin’, “Oh Lord, please let this last” We seemed to float right through the air Heavenly songs seemed to come from everywhere And now when there’s moonglow, way up in the blue I’ll always remember, that moonglow gave me you It must have been moonglow, way up in the blue It must have been moonglow that led me straight to you I still hear you sayin’, “Sweet child, hold me fast” And I keep on prayin’, “Oh Lord, please let this last” We seemed to float right through the air Heavenly songs seemed to come from everywhere And now when there’s moonglow, way up in the blue I’ll always remember, that moonglow gave me you
