North Country Blues Bob Dylan
“Come gather ’round friends And I’ll tell you a tale”
Bob Dylans’ ideas and music are essential…
“The summer is gone The ground’s turning cold
The stores one by one they’re a-foldin’
My children will go As soon as they grow Well, there ain’t nothing here now to hold them”
What would Bob Dylan say about genocide?
“Neighborhood Bully
Well, the neighborhood bully, he’s just one man
His enemies say he’s on their land
They got him outnumbered about a million to one
He got no place to escape to, no place to run
He’s the neighborhood bully.
The neighborhood bully he just lives to survive
He’s criticized and condemned for being alive
He’s not supposed to fight back, he’s supposed to have thick skin
He’s supposed to lay down and die when his door is kicked in
He’s the neighborhood bully.
The neighborhood bully been driven out of every land
He’s wandered the earth an exiled man
Seen his family scattered, his people hounded and torn
He’s always on trial for just being born
He’s the neighborhood bully.
Well, he knocked out a lynch mob, he was criticized
Old women condemned him, said he should apologize
Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad
The bombs were meant for him. He was supposed to feel bad
He’s the neighborhood bully.
Well, the chances are against it, and the odds are slim
That he’ll live by the rules that the world makes for him
’Cause there’s a noose at his neck and a gun at his back
And a license to kill him is given out to every maniac
He’s the neighborhood bully.
Well, he’s surrounded by pacifists who all want peace
They pray for it nightly that the bloodshed must cease
Now, they wouldn’t hurt a fly. To hurt one they would weep
They lay and they wait for this bully to fall asleep
He’s the neighborhood bully.
Every empire that’s enslaved him is gone
Egypt and Rome, even the great Babylon
He’s made a garden of paradise in the desert sand
In bed with nobody, under no one’s command
He’s the neighborhood bully.
What’s anybody indebted to him for?
Nothing, they say. He just likes to cause war
Pride and prejudice and superstition indeed
They wait for this bully like a dog waits for feed
He’s the neighborhood bully.
What has he done to wear so many scars?
Does he change the course of rivers?
Does he pollute the moon and stars?
Neighborhood bully, standing on the hill
Running out the clock, time standing still
Neighborhood bully.”

Bob Dylan – Not Dark Yet (Official HD Video)

Born Robert Allen Zimmerman (or to give him his Hebrew name: Shabtai Zisl ben Avraham) to, by all accounts, a fairly observant Jewish family, Dylan had a decidedly Jewish upbringing as part of the tight-knit, small Jewish communities of Duluth and Hibbing, Minnesota, growing up in a kosher home and even attending the religious-Zionist summer camp, Camp Herzl.
Some of Bob Dylan’s poetic insights:
“Act the way you’d like to be and soon you’ll be the way you’d like to act.”
“If you try to be anyone but yourself, you will fail; if you are not true to your own heart, you will fail. Then again, there’s no success like failure.”
“People seldom do what they believe in. They do what is convenient, then repent.”
“Inspiration is hard to come by. You have to take it when you find it.”
“He not busy being born is busy dying.”
“You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.”
“Gonna change my way of thinking, make my self a different set of rules.
Gonna put my good foot forward and stop being influenced by fools.”
“And I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinking.”
“Behind every beautiful thing, there’s some kind of pain.”
“Don’t criticize what you can’t understand.”
“All I can be is me — whoever that is.”
“Some people feel the rain, others just get wet.”

LOUIE KEMP – “DYLAN & ME: 50 YEARS OF ADVENTURES”
Oh, God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”
Abe said, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”
God say, “No.”
Abe say, “What?”
God say, “You can do what you want, Abe, but
The next time you see me comin’ you better run”
Well, Abe said, “Where you want this killin’ done?”

Bob Dylan – Highway 61,
Sept 16th 2000, Aberdeen Scotland
“For many, these words may be unfamiliar, but readers of a certain age sing this song in their head when they read the lyrics to “Highway 61 Revisited”, the title song from Bob Dylan’s groundbreaking 1965 album.”
https://aish.com/bob-dylan-and-the-philosophy-of-modern-song/
“As so often with Dylan, the song is equal parts provocative, incendiary, mystifying, thought-provoking, and quite silly. But if we pay attention, we can appreciate that this nice Jewish boy from Duluth raises some profound theological questions. And so would anyone that picks up the Bible. After all, how could Abraham actually go through with the commandment to sacrifice his own son? It’s almost inconceivable.”

Don’t matter what you did

Don’t tie no bows
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don’t need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows”

Bob Dylan – Watching the River Flow
“While living in Canada in the late 1960s, Leon Redbone began performing in public at Toronto area nightclubs and folk music festivals. He met Bob Dylan at the Mariposa Folk Festival in 1972. Dylan was so impressed by Redbone’s performance that he mentioned it in a Rolling Stone interview, leading that magazine to do a feature article on Redbone a year before he had a recording contract. The article described his performances as “so authentic you can hear the surface noise [of an old 78 rpm].” Dylan said that if he had ever started a label, he would have signed Redbone. “

Death may be one of the greatest human blessings. ~00
Feb 26, 2015 —
“You hear a lot about God these days: God, the beneficent; God, the all-great; God, the Almighty; God, the most powerful; God, the giver of life; God, the creator of death. I mean, we’re hearing about God all the time, so we better learn how to deal with it. But if we know anything about God, God is arbitrary.” ~Bob Dylan

“On August 2nd, 1962, civilisation would change forever when a 21-year-old Minnesotan called Robert Allen Zimmerman would make the decision to be now known as Bob Dylan. It may have felt like a small moment at the time, but little did he know, it would soon become a significant action in the history of music.”

“Zimmerman’s bold decision to change his name to Bob Dylan wasn’t the first time he had performed under an alias. The growing folkie first gained a notable reputation whilst going by the name of Elston Gunn as well as variations on his birth name such as Robert Allen. However, it was on Bob Dylan that he would eventually settle.”

Feb. 25, 1964 – Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, 22, was the guest tonight on The New Steve Allen Show. After a brief interview, Dylan performed his song, “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.” The song was released on his latest album, “The Times They Are a-Changin,’” and gives a generally factual account of the slaying of a 51-year-old barmaid, Hattie Carroll, by William Zantzinger, a young man from a wealthy white tobacco farming family in Charles County, Maryland, and of his subsequent sentence to six months in a county jail.
