“Nothing is less real than realism. Details are confusing. It is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis, that we get at the real meaning of things.”
—Georgia O’Keeffe
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) was a pioneering American modernist painter, celebrated for her bold, semi-abstract works and her iconic paintings of large-scale flowers and desert landscapes from the American Southwest. Born in Wisconsin, she studied art in Chicago and New York but developed her own unique style, which was influenced by her rural upbringing and her time in New Mexico, where she eventually moved. Her work is considered a major contribution to American modernism.
