What the figure means
The project estimates that post‑9/11 U.S. military operations — including Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, and other counterterrorism and intervention campaigns — have directly killed about 1.05 million people and indirectly caused about 3.6–3.8 million more deaths (through conflict spillover, displacement, and related violence) The sum of these is 4.5–4.7 million total deaths.
