Evil is goin’ on…

When I was a youngster, I have memories of when we lived in an apartment on the South Side of Tower Grove Park. Then we moved to Cahokia Illinois, into a duplex almost like a home. There I piled up my toys and escaped from the playpen. They captured me down at the corner, trying to figure out how to cross the street. Then we moved back into the heart of St. Louis on Pershing Avenue. We had streetcars running in both directions in the middle of the street.

Our place was the entire third floor of the brownstone. I could look out the bay window and watch the streetcars with blue sparks falling while they went down the road. I would scat down the alleyways, lookin’ for adventure and walk several blocks to Hamilton Avenue Elementary School for Pre-School and then Kindergarten. If I walked West on Pershing, past the Deli and newspaper shop, I could turn left on DeBaliviere Ave and walk through the Jefferson Memorial into Forest Park. The vast forested park had a river running under it and artificial rivers running through it. When I kept walking I got to the Jewel Box, a small arboretum I loved. Sometimes I would sneak onto the streetcars, since I was only knee high, the conductors usually missed me. And I would ride downtown to see the glorious Mississipi River. It sure was fine.

In the summer of 57 we moved out to the suburbs into a house with cornfields and a farmhouse across the street by Coldwater creek and a short walk down Mullanphy took me to the Missouri river, where I learned how to almost drown. It was glorious living just above and West of where the rivers meet before heading South and draining into the gulf of Mexico. This was my home for a number of years, back when Monarch butterflies emerged from fields ripe with hundreds of milkweed pods and snapping turtles guarded the Missouri river.

But parts of my childhood took place near the damn on Cedar river in Cedar Falls, Iowa where Nana taught me to fish. Also up in Minnesota on Aunt Zelma and Uncle Roger’s farm, where the windmill turned, pumping water from the well into the horse tank. Roger crop-dusted the corn with a small plane and they had horses, pigs, chickens and a few other critters.

During these harder times than now, the United States of America was recovering and moving forward from World War Two. My dad was a divinity student, a teenager living in Iowa. But feral Fascism was growing in Europe. Jim Flanagan rejected his parent’s Catholic roots, became a Quaker then a Friend and was completing graduate school. While he considered himself to be a pacifist, Jim was concerned about rising Fascism. So he joined the Army and served as a radio operator, facilitating communications between the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Socialism is an odd notion… about humanity…

The 1950’s were supposed to be about securing peace, healing, reconstruction and reconcilation. But today in the 2020’s, America is exporting 56 unprovoked but expanding wars costing trillions, killing millions, bankrupting the USA and crippling Mother Earth.

We are in a heap of trouble after these past 74 years,.

Which Side Are You On?

Marx was no magician, Spinoza not a wizard and capitalism is a lot of specious and strained economic theories, neither an entity nor a bogeyman. Marx, an economist, was interested in isms, but in today’s demonstrably more complex and interconnected universe… isms isn’t the point.

Don John Trump, a depraved blithering idiot, racist, rapist, misogynist and war criminal is in charge of exporting terror munitions and 56 unprovoked but expanding wars costing trillions, killing millions, bankrupting the nation and crippling the planet. Donald is amoral, ignores the constitution, betrays the bill of rights and abrogates the rule of law. Congress is too cowardly to remove him.

Americans have the most expensive and least effective health care among the ten most developed nations. The USA is dead last. American schools have been failing and illiteracy is rising. Yet Trump is attacking 56 nations who did not attack America, along with several American cities. This corporate neo-Fascism about extraction, exploitation and extortion is not OK. We are under attack, and it’s past time to stand up and fight back. The enemy sits in the Oval Office paving the rose garden and demolishing the East Wing.

Isms have become archaic myths examined in political science 101 but these ideas beg real questions: ignoble distractions from peace, justice, equity, freedom and human dignity…
