Many countries, such as Canada and Germany, provide universal coverage to all of the country’s inhabitants, meaning that all residents are covered for basic healthcare services.

Universal health coverage impacts health and welfare for everyday people. Providing access to the use of health services makes people more productive and active contributors for families and communities. This means children can go to school and learn. Financial risk protection prevents people from being pushed into poverty, bankruptcy or homelessness when they must pay for health services out of their own pockets.

Universal health coverage is a critical component of sustainable development, poverty reduction, and reductions in social inequities.
