People and the Planet: Humanity at a Crossroads

Humans are the most common and widespread species of primate in the great ape family Hominidae. Humans are characterized by bipedalism and high intelligence. Their scientific name is Homo sapiens, of the order primates. These humans have 206 bones and are anatomically similar and related to the great apes (orangutans, chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas) but are distinguished by a more highly developed brain that allows articulate speech and abstract reasoning.

Are humans really apes?
