The “Last Judgement…”

  • Historic obsessions and pretensions about “last judgement days” are melodramatic conjecture according to most people, including Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Atheists, Muslims, Existentialists, Agnostics, Humanists, Wizards, Christians, Shamans, Astrologers, Writers, Philosophers, Poets, Musicians, Teachers, Scientists, Fortune Tellers, Cartoonists and Artists….

Last judgments” across history, are mostly blind-faith fear-mongering championed by kings, priests, preachers or shamans to fire up a scare.

Fear is useful for placation, divination, control and enchantment… but “goin’ to hell” journalism and evangelism are simplistic and dangerous formulas.

In this infinite universe, beyond our ken, we can enjoy life, people, creativity, imagination, wonder and good hearts instead of reinventing demons.

People are embracing courage and joy.

Ignoble traditions of kings, churches and princesses and sorcerers, built on rituals and myths, may provide sad vestiges of forgotten yesterdays… but with courage and vision we can live fully in each day: without fear, compromise or surrender.   Selah.

“I shall tell you a great secret my friend.  Do not wait for the last judgment, it takes place every day.”

    Albert Camus

Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.

~[Preface to Brissot’s Address to His Constituents (1794)]  wood_ebedmundburkeEdmund Burke, On Empire, Liberty, and Reform: Speeches and Letters

“If you didn’t grow up like I did then you don’t know, and if you don’t know it’s probably better you don’t judge.”

Junot Díaz, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

“The truth is that judgment and fear will never stop, but they don’t actually do anything.”

    Julien Smith, The Flinch

“It’s so egotistical to believe that we know more about someone else’s reality than they do, and such a waste of time.”

Shreve Stockton, The Daily Coyote: Story of Love, Survival, and Trust In the Wilds of Wyoming

“It is only our conception of time that makes us call the Last Judgement by this name. It is, in fact, a kind of martial law.”

    ~Franz Kafka

“Justice and judgment lie often a world apart.”
    ~Emmeline Pankhurst

“Netanyahu is pressured easily, gets into a panic, and loses his senses… to run a country like Israel a leader needs to have reason and judgment and nerves of steel, two traits he does not have.”

    ~Ariel Sharon

Franz-Kafka-Quotes-3I’m not an atheist, and I don’t think I can call myself
a pantheist. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws. Our limited minds grasp the mysterious force that moves the constellations.”

    emmeline-pankhurst1

“I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own – a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. It is enough for me to contemplate the mystery of conscious life perpetuating itself through all eternity, to reflect upon the marvelous structure of the universe which we can dimly perceive and to try humbly to comprehend even an infinitesimal part of the intelligence manifested in Nature.”

“The scientist is possessed by the sense of universal causation. His religious feeling takes the form of a rapturous amazement at the harmony of natural law, which reveals an intelligence of such superiority that , compared with it, all the systematic thinking and acting of human beings is an utterly insignificant reflection.”

“Everything that the human race has done and thought is concerned with the satisfaction of deeply felt needs and assuagement of pain. One has to keep this constantly in mind if one wishes to understand spiritual movements and their development. Feeling and longing are the motive force behind all human endeavor and human creation, in however exalted a guise the latter may present themselves to us.”
